Five field marks converge on European Starling — and, decisively, rule out the swallows and raptors that the silhouette invites. Below, the case as the panel built it.
A compact triangular body with a large head and a stub of a tail — the starling gestalt. Swallows are sleek with long wings and a forked or notched tail; the proportions here are wrong for them.
In both frames the bird holds a dark, bristling clump of invertebrate prey — leatherjackets and the like — carried crosswise. This is an adult provisioning nestlings, and it rules out seed-eaters (House Finch) and single-prey carriers.
The bird is wedged where the dark fascia meets the pale soffit — a crevice/cavity, not a mud cup or gourd. European Starlings are the archetypal building-soffit cavity nester; swallows build open mud nests instead.
Even against harsh backlight, a faint iridescent gloss reads on the head — the oil-on-water sheen of starling plumage, absent in sparrows, finches, and swallows.
The body runs slightly longer than one exposed lap-siding board (~15–20 cm) — larger than a House Sparrow, far smaller than any hawk. Starling-sized, and provisioning young in late July fits the breeding calendar.
Caveat of the field: these are backlit photos shot straight up into the sky. No panel — human or machine — should call this a certainty. The weight of evidence, and the agreement of every provider on one name, is what makes Starling the answer of record.

What the determination cost, in tokens. The 36 sub-agents run on Claude; the Codex and Grok cohorts additionally spend their providers' own vision-model tokens, billed separately by OpenAI and xAI. Figures for this session are captured before this very page was written.
On the accounting: "Total processed" sums fresh input, cache writes, cache reads, and output. Cache reads are re-supplied context billed at a fraction of fresh input, so the processed figure runs well above what a single pass would cost. "Output" is the tokens each model actually generated — the truest measure of thinking done. CLI figures are each provider's own self-reported usage.
A single photograph did the damage. Shot straight up into a bright sky, the bird reads as a dark shape with a hooked lean — and a hooked shape at the eaves whispers raptor. That is exactly the trap two of Grok's twelve observers fell into, naming a Cooper's Hawk and a Sharp-shinned Hawk; a third reached for an American Kestrel. The silhouette, not the bird, was talking.
Codex was the disciplined witness: all twelve returns said European Starling, and their reasoning kept landing on the same three anchors — cavity at the soffit, bill-full of insects, stocky short-tailed build. Unanimity on a hard, backlit subject is the strongest signal the panel produced.
Claude's cohort was the most cautious, and split its vote: five agents read the aerial-insectivore posture and beak-full as a Barn Swallow bringing food to an eave nest; four held out for Starling on the cavity and the crown-gloss. Careful, but over-weighting behavior over structure.
Grok was the widest scatter — American Robin, House Finch, House Sparrow, three different raptors, and only two votes for Starling. High variance, low agreement: a cohort that, on this subject, you would want to see corroborated.
The lesson of the ballot is not that one model "won." It is that consensus across providers — the one name, Starling, that Claude, Codex, and Grok all independently reached — outperforms any single confident voice. Thirty-six eyes, three of them fooled by a shadow, still converge on the bird.
